Camping at the Beach

El Capitan Sunrise

The family and I went camping at El Capitan State Beach for fall break (north of Santa Barbara, California). Spent a week there…great campsite! Here are a few landscape images from the trip. It’s been a while since I’ve taken a full-fledged landscape shot. All were taken using a Mamiya RB67 medium-format film camera, 90mm lens, and Kodak Ektar 100 film.

  1. Your photos are as beautiful as your music

    boys. Kayte x

  2. some great pics there, mate
Lovely light too – looks like it was well worth waiting for the sun to go down! is that some long exposures used to creating the nice effect on the water, too?

  3. Thanks Neil! Yes, some long exposures. I recall one exposure was 16 seconds long, although I don’t know if it was one of these frames or not. Certainly in the several-seconds zone for many of them.

  4. These photos are stunning! Fact. I’m a web designer, and i look at these photos and am envious about using these for some lovely wallpapers etc…
    Stunning though, simply stunning 🙂

  5. Thanks Brandon! Coming from you that means a lot.

I scanned these on my Epson 4990. Since they were just ‘vacation snaps’ I didn’t want to spend the (relatively) big bucks and have a pro lab do it. Not the best quality scanner, but for large negs it does a pretty decent job. 35mm however doesn’t fare so well, since the realistic resolution on the scanner is *maybe* 2400 dpi.

  6. How nice it is to be with mother nature! The nice and beautiful shots taken, the enigmatic looks of it. Its kinda amazing, you have a great eye lens on it.As if everything is timed in a click.I could have imagine myself,in a real scene upon looking on it.Really wonderful!

  7. Your photos are very inspiring. I live in NJ and am planning to move to California. I think your pictures will push me to make it happen sooner rather than later.

  8. Thanks! And yes, it’s definitely a beautiful state! The full sun can be a little frustrating at times from a photographic standpoint, but that’s not really a complaint. 🙂
